How can I keep my patio clean?

With years of experience laying and maintaining patios, DBK Builders and Joiners are here to show you how you can keep your patio clean.
Of course, this goes without saying. Regular brushing is vital to ensure your patio and garden paving are free from dirt, debris and grime. However, it is more important than it first seems. In the summer months, as plants and weeds go to seed, these seeds will find their way into cavities. With some water, sunlight and conducive temperatures, these seeds will germinate. If untouched and left to grow, all sorts of flowers, plants, weeds and grasses, will take over your patio in no time. Regular brushing, using a brush with tough bristles will interrupt the seed germination process and prevent the unsightly build up of growth on your patio.
Jet Washing
Brushing may be too labour intensive for some and thus not a viable option. In this circumstance, a jet wash may offer the perfect solution. Jet washing achieves the benefits of brushing, minus the hard work. However, it does come with its own pitfalls. Using a jet wash on joint areas too closely can leave the mortar liable to damage. Also, a high-pressure jet wash can damage slabs and paving. So, go slow and steady, otherwise you may do more damage than good. Through a combination of regular brushing and occasional jet washing, you can keep your patio weed-free and gleaming.
Joints and Sealing Slabs
If you allow the degradation of either the joints in your patio or the sealing slabs, your patio will accelerate towards degradation. By ensuring joints are well maintained, you will go a long way towards combatting the prevalence of weeds. By sealing paving stones, you will contribute to the prevent of moisture permeating the flags. A sealant will also help keep your paving stones looking fresh and new!

DIY Tips You Can’t Do Without!

Walls before floors – If you’re planning on renovating your flooring, it might be worthwhile considering whether your walls need a touch up first. Since your old flooring will soon be on its way out, you can worry less about the mess you make when re-doing your walls, prior to the installation of your new flooring. Save yourself the mess and hassle and enjoy a doubly new look to your home.

Keep brushes and rollers fresh – You don’t need to wash brushes and rollers between coats or uses. Rather than going through the pain of washing your vital painting tools between each use, use cling film to keep them in full working order. Simply, wrap used brushes and rollers in cling film and they will stay moist enough to use again soon.

Talc – Talc is a great DIY hack that you’ll be thankful to know. Sprinkled sparingly on squeaky door hinges and creaky floorboards, talk can really do wonders to get rid of those annoying sounds.

Baby oil – We’ve all been there, after painting we find that our tiny gloves barely protected us to our cuffs. You’ve tried scrubbing and a range of toxic agents you really shouldn’t use for the purpose, yet you still can’t get that paint residue off your skin. Well, baby oil to the rescue! A small amount of baby oil can help get rid of those pesky paint residues.

Paint fumes – Followed by correct ventilation practices, protect yourself further from overbearing paint fumes by adding a dab of vanilla essence to your paint tin. This way, you might get more of it done before retiring with a headache!

Linseed oil – A glob of paint drops on a surface without us noticing. By the time we go to wipe it, it’s gone hard and some stays behind. Here, rubbing a little linseed oil on the affected area can help remove the paint stain once and for all.

Common Roofing Problems

As storms batter down on the country, we believe now is the best time to address some common roofing problems. Your roof is your home’s area most exposed to the elements and the most common area from where lasting damage can be caused. From wind, rain and even snow, to unwelcome pests and maybe even some protected species, your roof can be the source of considerable damage to your home. Join DBK Builders and Joiners, as we take you through some of the most common and damaging roofing problems.

Bad Installation

A badly installed roof is a recipe for disaster. Roof tiles placed incorrectly can allow water to enter, leading to a myriad of problems. Improperly fixed tiles, caused by poor nail placement, can result in slipping and breaking, leaving the structure of your roof totally exposed. Moreover, when guttering or flashing is not applied properly, this could cause water to be misdirected leading to pooling and penetration. Thus, the first concern when it comes to roofing is that is installed correctly.

Water Damage

With sky-high annual rainfall figures across most of the North West, the greatest threat to your roof is water damage. While proper roof installation will mitigate most problems arising from water damage, flat roofs and those prone to being punctured pose a considerable challenge. Water pooling is another sign of your roof failing and will require urgent action. Apart from leaks and water damage, if water pools excessively it may jeopardise the structural integrity of your roof and lead to possible collapse.

Roof Membrane

The protective membrane below your roof tiles is the all-important cog which makes your roof function. However, prone to shrinkage caused by UV light, the roof’s protective membrane can crack and ridge over time. This can lead to tiles being disturbed and your roof failing.

General Tips on how to Select a Tradesman

At DBK Joiners and Builders we pride ourselves in delivering the most efficient, timely and cost-effective building and joinery services. As part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, we intend to promote better awareness of the trades through regularly updated blog posts. Over the course of our blog posts we will provide regular information and guidance on all matters related to building and joinery. In this opening instalment, we will start with general tips on how to select a tradesman.

While your search for builders and joiners starts and ends with DBK Builders and Joiners, it is our intention that our customers and the general public make the most informed decision when selecting tradesmen for work. Our first point of advice would be to encourage you to conduct research on whomever you wish to select for your work. There is no greater testimony for a tradesman’s work than the results of that work. Thus, our first advice would be to speak to a company’s previous customers in order to determine their suitability for the task at hand and how you would feel about employing their services. Please visit our Testimonials page where you can scan through customers’ feedback on work carried out by DBK Joiners and Builders. We are also willing to provide references from our multitude of satisfied clientele.

Our second tip would be to create a written record of the discussions you have with your chosen builder and joiner about the work that needs carrying out. DBK Joiners and builders specialise in providing a vast range of services and household construction solutions. An exhaustive list is available on our Services page.

The two tips mentioned above provide the cornerstone for a good relationship between you and the builders you choose to carry out work in your property. Stay tuned for further blog posts, in which we will offer further advice.

The Point of Repointing

The Point of Repointing

Every inch of your home is important, and it is vital that the little things are not neglected. Quite aside from all the precious contents of your home, the outside plays its part too. An often overlooked part of upkeeping your home is pointing the brickwork, an essential maintenance task which has numerous benefits aside from the visual.

What is Pointing?

Your home’s pointing is the mortar that lies between the bricks on the outside of your property. Over time this can wear away and crumble, leaving the structure of your home vulnerable to damage which could prove costly to correct. Repointing involves removing the damaged mortar and refilling the gaps to strengthen and protect the brickwork from further harm.

Why do we need to repoint our home?

A properly pointed brick façade helps preserve the structure of your home, strengthening the brickwork and keeping your home standing. The pointing also prevents water seeping between the bricks, allowing you to avoid damp problems later on! Water resting between the bricks can freeze and expand, causing further damage to your walls. Another fantastic benefit of pointing is retaining heat inside your home. Less heat is allowed to escape through the walls, so you can save money on your heating bills. And let’s not forget the visual bonus- a new pointing job can transform and refresh the outside look of your home and make it look as good as new!

How often is repointing needed?

While not the most glamourous of home renovations, repointing is an important part of your refurbishments. One of the more positive aspects of pointing, however, is its longevity. A well-done pointing job has a lifespan of more than two decades, so the process is a wonderful investment in the future of your home.
